Uncertainties in microseismic event locations for horizontal, vertical, and deviated boreholes

Abstract
Precise microseismic event location is the first step towards fracture evaluation generated in response to fluid/steam injection into the reservoir. We analyze resulting uncertainties in microseismic event locations by minimizing the squared misfit between the observed and theoretical arrival times between P- and S-waves and associated back azimuth at each receiver for a single horizontal, vertical or deviated borehole. Inclusion of the back azimuth difference greatly increases the location stability. At the same time minimum uncertainty space is associated with the deviated borehole geometry, favoring this borehole geometry for microseismic data acquisition
