Abstract
D’après Montaigne, la guerre et la paix sont l’expression de deux tendances naturelles en l’homme : tendance à la destruction et à la cruauté d’une part, tendance à l’affection et à la compassion d’autre part. Y a-t-il un bon usage de la conflictualité ? Les Essais montrent que cette dernière n’est pas incompatible avec le lien social, et qu’elle peut même le servir, mais à condition d’élaborer des modèles de vivre ensemble dans la conflictualité, sur la base d’une éthique de la différence, et non du mythe de sa suppression. C’est dans ce cadre que l’essai ou mise à l’épreuve de soi auprès des autres par la parole permet d’envisager une fraternité laïque.
