Abstract
Le vêtement, signe matériel et physique de l’appartenance sociale et de l’identité culturelle, est un produit très prisé dans les échanges entre Amérindiens et Français pendant la première moitié du XVIII e siècle. Les nombreuses représentations textuelles et visuelles du vêtement amérindien qui figurent dans les relations de voyage témoignent de cette importance. Bien que les voyageurs en aient une vision stéréotypée, ils décrivent parfois avec précision certains habits qui protégeraient efficacement le corps du futur colon. Tout en reconnaissant les qualités de certains vêtements, la façon dont les Amérindiens les portent et celle dont ils s’approprient les habits européens constituent pour les voyageurs des signes de sauvagerie et prouvent la nécessité de civiliser les Autochtones. Loin d’être superficiel, le rapport au vêtement se trouve au cœur de la relation interculturelle et coloniale. Il est révélateur de la confrontation des identités, du métissage culturel, des tensions politiques, et de la résistance des Amérindiens au processus de colonisation.
