Abstract
Abstract This paper considers the post(‐)colonial hyphen and the issues in the field which are associated with its comparatively unexamined disappearance. In recent years an inordinate number of “introductory” books have attempted to create stability and fixity for this otherwise unstable field, and post‐colonial theory has problematically become a project of defining and labeling. Definitions have largely set temporal and spatial boundaries, and an examination of Anne McClintock and Ato Quayson's theories illustrates the limits of these axes of inquiry. Post‐coloniality's relation to questions of globalisation is asserted as a continuity rather than as the rupture which theorists such as Arif Dirlik and Hardt and Negri suggest. Given its continuing relevance, post‐coloniality needs to learn to speak from unstable spaces rather than insisting on stable ones.
