Abstract
Alors que le rôle de l’image enseignante au sein des missions amérindiennes a fait l’objet de nombreuses analyses scientifiques, l’objet de piété, élément pourtant essentiel de la transmission du religieux, reste encore dans l’ombre. Supports concrets et familiers de la dévotion, les chapelets, médailles et crucifix participent d’autant plus activement à l’édification et à l’instruction des Hurons qu’ils trouvent une résonance particulière dans les pratiques traditionnelles amérindiennes. L’étude du discours des Jésuites sur ces objets témoigne de l’influence du contexte post-tridentin français sur les pratiques missionnaires en Nouvelle-France dans la première moitié du XVII e siècle. Les Pères proposent à leurs lecteurs l’image d’un Amérindien dont l’altérité se trouve gommée par son usage des signes catholiques – une image idéalisée qu’il convient de confronter à la réalité.
