Under the auspices of the 93rd Indian Science Congress—a broad‐spectrum annual gathering of Indian scientists—and as a part of the event “Science, and the U.N. Millennium Development Goals,” this author organized a panel discussion entitled “Biophysical and socioeconomic dimensions of food security in the developing countries,” which was held on 6 January 2006 at Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University, Hyderabad, India. The purpose of the panel discussion was to develop an integrated strategy to make use of the consilience among bio, nano, and information technologies; innovative agricultural and management practices; and administrative policies, in order to achieve the United Nations [U.N.] Millennium Development Goal of halving by 2015 the number of undernourished people in the world, which currently totals about 850 million people. Of these, 221 million live in India, with 142 million in China.
