Abstract
The University of British Columbia (UBC) officially opened its new Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences Building on September 18, 2012 — a $133-million dollar facility with 246,000 square feet of space that will allow UBC to expand its numbers of students and research initiatives. The new facility will enable the Faculty to graduate 224 new pharmacists per year by 2015 — a 47% increase from current levels, UBC said in a September 18 news release. It will also support the expansion of Masters, Doctoral and Doctor of Pharmacy programs. Research space for drug discovery and health care innovation has been doubled and the building will also house several other research organizations, including the Centre for Drug Research and Development (CDRD). A pharmacy clinic is also planned, where students are to provide medication education to members of the public, under the supervision of licensed pharmacists. The BC government contributed $86.4 million to the building, which won a 2012 Canadian Architect Award of Excellence. The facility also increases the Faculty's community presence. “The Story of Medicines, a permanent interactive exhibit that tells the story of pharmacy through hands-on touch screen technology, games and historical pharmacy artifacts, will help visitors better understand the pharmacy profession, the development of drugs and how they interact with the body,” said the UBC release.
