Cet article analyse les Passions de l'âme pour mettre en relief les stratégies cartésiennes : Descartes montre les limites de l'explication mécaniste des passions par leurs causes prochaines et dernières, les esprits animaux. Cette explication se doublant d'une théorie de l'objet affectif, de l'importance des objets passionnants qui sont les causes premières et principales des passions, se termine par l'exaltation de la générosité, vertu et passion de la liberté. Ce n'est que parce que le vocabulaire de l'intentionnalité et de la morale se réfléchit sur le vocabulaire mécaniste abstrait qu 'il lui donne un sens. Aussi l'ouvrage devrait-il être parcouru à l'envers, en commençant par la fin.
