Abstract
Cet article analyse la stagnation des trafics sur le Saint-Laurent en la comparant avec les autres grands groupes portuaires du continent, à l'aide d'un modèle de référence de la porte continentale proposé ici selon la même démarche que celle qu'a adoptée J. Bird pour Anyport. Les caractéristiques de la porte continentale reposent à la fois sur la nature des trafics, sur l'existence d'un avant-pays assez fourni, sur le caractère multi-modal des connexions avec l'arrière-pays, et sur la présence de ce que A. Vigarié appelle un « carrefour polyfonctionnel d'échanges ». Il en ressort de grandes tendances à l'échelle continentale. La porte du Saint-Laurent n'est pas celle qui se signale par l'évolution la plus négative, même si des compétitions non négligeables apparaissent. En tonnages mais pas en valeur, la principale porte continentale nord-américaine n'est pas sur l'Atlantique, mais sur le golfe du Mexique; sur le Saint-Laurent, la fonction de porte continentale est éparpillée le long du fleuve.
