Les différentes options thérapeutiques pour la correction des déficits transversaux du maxillaire supérieur sont bien connues par les orthodontistes et les chirurgiens maxillo-faciaux. Mais qu’en est-il des insuffisances transversales mandibulaires ? De nombreux traitements d’expansion de la mandibule par orthopédie dento-faciale ont été suggérés, mais ils ont souvent tendance à récidiver. La distraction symphysaire est la solution toute indiquée pour corriger les défauts transversaux mandibulaires, particulièrement dans les cas de déficit majeur tel que le syndrome de Brodie. En plus de rétablir une occlusion physiologique, elle permet des gains osseux et tissulaires considérables qui améliorent non seulement la fonction et l’esthétique du patient, mais assurent également une stabilité occlusale à long terme.
