Abstract
Madame de Sévigné's literary production is so closely linked to the French tradition of literarycorrespondence that it may appear absurd to regard it as not belonging fully to the epistolarygenre. But the almost obsessive practice of the letter suggests that Madame de Sévignédeliberately exceeds the limits of the genre, leading us to believe that, as well as wishing tocommunicate her daily life to her daughter, she also wishes to create a hybrid form of personalwriting, half way between casual correspondence and a diary, the letter serving in this case asthe first draft of a text in gestation, like a trampoline aimed at a textual universe that only existsas a possibility. A century before Rousseau explicitly formulated the pact that heralded themodern age of autobiography, Madame de Sévigné discreetly borrows the "I" of an "epistolarypact".
