S’il est une négativité du bizarre et une positivité du génie, au xviii e siècle, c’est d’abord parce que ces deux figures se distinguent communément d’une certaine norme. Leur articulation pivote autour de la notion polyvalente d’« originalité », évaluée selon la manière dont elle est digérée par la communauté. Il y a une faille entre les usages et l’innovation, dans laquelle le bizarre tombe et que comble le génie, mettant au jour la difficile négociation entre le singulier et le commun.
