Les Sourds se définissent en tant que groupe culturel et tentent de se faire reconnaître comme tel. Pendant ce temps, le groupe entendant les voit comme des individus atteints d'une déficience physique. Les relations entre les deux groupes s'établissent alors dans des « rapports de force ». C'est dans un tel environnement que la culture sourde se développe et l'étude d'un cas nous montre comment l'intégration par la normalisation est basée sur un processus qui bien souvent néglige la qualité de vie et accentue l'handicap. En contrepartie, la culture sourde permet de s'ajuster au fait de vivre quotidiennement dans un monde où l'on évalue les besoins des Sourds non pas en fonction de leur vécu, mais en fonction des valeurs dominantes de normalisation.
