L'île d'El Hierro (270 km2, 8 000 habitants), la terre la plus isolée des Canaries, est en marche depuis juin 2014 vers l'objectif de 100 % d'énergies renouvelables, grâce à une originale centrale hydro-éolienne. Une STEP (Station de transfert d'énergie par pompage et turbinage) avec deux barrages, telle une batterie hydraulique, assure deux jours d'autonomie lors des pannes de vent ou des tempêtes. L'indépendance énergétique est le résultat d'une initiative de la base, celle d'un technicien et dirigeant politique de l'île, qui fut relayée par les administrations des Canaries, de l'Espagne, de l'Europe et des Nations Unies, dont l'UNESCO. Ce succès du type « Small is Beautiful » passa par des initiatives individuelles dès 1947, appuyé par des artistes et un parti politique insulaire. La transition écologique fut officialisée en 2000 par la déclaration d'El Hierro Réserve de la biosphère par l'UNESCO. Elle permit de lever 80 millions d'euros avec lesquels une société mixte, où les intérêts locaux sont majoritaires, bâtit un ensemble énergétique qui avait été projeté dès les années 1980 : un parc de 5 éoliennes de 11 MW, une usine de dessalement, deux barrages et une centrale hydraulique de 11 MW. La bonne articulation, dans une société traditionnelle, entre un projet de protection et de valorisation de la nature avec la modernité, tels les réseaux intelligents, a rendu possible le chemin vers l'indépendance énergétique. Cette réalisation est reproductible sur les îles hautes et ventées du monde comme surtout elle peut en inspirer bien d'autres.
