Résumé Cet article analyse l’évolution qui se produit dans l’environnement économique et social, en particulier la mondialisation des échanges, les développements technologiques, les progrès des télécommunications et de l’informatique ainsi que le raccourcissement des cycles économiques. Les conséquences pour les entreprises sont la disparition d’entreprises, les plans sociaux, les restructurations, une concurrence accrue sur des marchés et des consommateurs de plus en plus exigeants. Sous la pression de tels facteurs, on assiste à un clivage de la fonction commerciale entre deux tendances. Les fonctions commerciales routinières semblent vouées à la disparition au profit du télémarketing et du commerce électronique. Par contre, les fonctions commerciales à haute valeur ajoutée se professionnalisent et occupent une position stratégique dans l’entreprise. Cette tendance se traduit notamment par le développement de la vente relationnelle et par une plus grande reconnaissance du rôle stratégique de la fonction commerciale. Cette polarisation des métiers de la vente devrait entraîner la diminution du nombre de fonctions commerciales en face à face. Par contre, dans le cas des fonctions commerciales à haute valeur ajoutée, aucune communication numérique ne saurait remplacer le contact personnalisé du vendeur, qui permet de créer un climat de confiance et d’établir des relations pérennes avec la clientèle.
