Abstract
En 1836, rien ne va plus entre le Parlement du Bas-Canada et le gouvernement colonial. Le Conseil législatif use et abuse de son veto, le gouverneur Gosford a perdu toute crédibilité auprès de la majorité patriote à la Chambre et Londres tarde à répondre aux doléances manifestées depuis 1834 dans les 92 Résolutions. Jusqu'alors, le refus de voter les subsides avait été l'arme des députés, mais une tendance se dessine au sein de l'exécutif à passer outre les volontés budgétaires du Parlement. Convoqués en session en septembre 1836, les députés en viennent à refuser toute collaboration législative. C'est la grève. Dès lors, l'État colonial est totalement paralysé. L'épreuve de force est ainsi engagée et la constitution de 1791, révélant toutes ses carences structurelles, condamnée à terme.
