Abstract
Champions du scandale et de la violence verbale, les surréalistes français passent également pour les maîtres de l’invective. Ce jugement de la postérité doit cependant être en partie revu. L’invective n’était quasiment pas pratiquée ni souhaitée par le groupe lors de son émergence. Il a fallu que certains surréalistes — au premier rang desquels Aragon — l’imposent pour qu’elle apparaisse dans le répertoire collectif des techniques surréalistes de la violence verbale. L’approche sociohistorique adoptée ici permet de retracer les étapes de cette immixtion de l’invective dans les pratiques du groupe surréaliste français et de comprendre les différentes évaluations qui en ont été faites.
