De l’américanisme en France : le statut paradoxal de la musique jazz (1920-1930)

Abstract
Le présent article montre l’ambivalence devant l’américanisme qui apparaît très présent en France dès les années vingt, en se basant sur les représentations de la musique jazz dans la production littéraire de l’époque. D’abord, il sera question de l’esthétique de Jean Cocteau qui, par son enthousiasme pour le music-hall et le primitivisme de la musique « noire », défend, voire s’inspire du jazz et des américains. En second lieu, la problématique de l’engouement pour le jazz non unanime sera investiguée, et l’étude de cette musique « inouïe » se fera également à travers ses détracteurs. Par ces deux exemples contradictoires mais emblématiques du discours sur le phénomène jazz, la musique américaine servira alors de prisme à travers lequel la culture française cherche à se redéfinir sur le plan esthétique et épistémologique, et comment, de cette rencontre, naîtra une nouvelle manière de penser l’art.
