Abstract
L'article soumet l'hypothèse d'un modèle de sociabilité spécifique aux Canadiens français du début du XXe siècle, modèle très différent en particulier de celui des Canadiens anglais et des Américains. L'hypothèse se fonde sur le taux anormalement élevé de consanguinité enregistré dans les paroisses françaises de l'archidiocèse de Montréal, de 1901 à 1932, comparé à ceux d'autres populations de l'Occident industriel contemporain. Les explications habituelles du phénomène sont soumises à un examen critique. On vérifie une interprétation de H. Miner sur les mariages entre cousins dans une localité rurale du Québec, en contrôlant les mariages consanguins du Montréal catholique du début du siècle par le groupe linguistique et la strate sociale. Il ressort de cette étude que les connexions de parenté chez les Canadiens français de jadis recèlent une puissance qui se répercute sur la vie de relation et lui confère une forme originale.
