Abstract
The need to effectively manage the quarter of the UK population affected by long-term health conditions has been a major driver of health-care policy over recent years. As data began to emerge about the numbers affected by CKD, coupled with the rise in obesity, hypertension and diabetes, the major impact that this posed was recognized by headlines in the medical press such as ‘Facing an epidemic of chronic kidney disease’. A plethora of CKD focused-actions has followed: Part Two of the Renal National Service Framework, the laboratories reporting estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFR), and the addition of CKD to the Quality and Outcomes Framework. Furthermore, the new NHS Health Checks will help identify CKD patients.
