Peu d’études se penchent sur la religion populaire et les lieux de pèlerinage et de prière au Québec. Les analyses générales du catholicisme examinent plutôt les facteurs de sa déperdition. Notre hypothèse est que la mémoire collective du Québec porte en elle, encore, des traces de la piété populaire d’autrefois, certes fortement encadrée en contexte post-tridentin. Cette mémoire persiste ou se réactive, à la faveur d’un mouvement spirituel particulier et souvent temporaire. Une première partie s’attarde sur certaines particularités du catholicisme québécois, eu égard à la religion populaire. Sur cet horizon, l’étude d’un sanctuaire urbain de Montréal, l’église du Gesù, s’avère particulièrement intéressante. S’y déploient deux histoires de renouveau spirituel successives, l’une s’inscrivant dans le renouveau charismatique des années 1970, l’autre dans une initiative artistique plus récente.
