La région du Détroit, dans le sud-ouest ontarien, est sans doute le terrain de marge par excellence. Situé à la frontière des États-Unis et séparé des autres centres francophones du Canada par des centaines de kilomètres, le Détroit était historiquement la plaque tournante entre les centres établis de la Nouvelle-France et les possessions françaises des pays d’en haut (donc une marge d’abord, mais un centre par rapport à une aire encore plus marginale). Les communautés de la rivière Détroit ont maintenu tout au cours du xx e siècle un répertoire de chansons traditionnelles françaises qui est très différent — tant dans la variété de ses chansons types que dans les catégories de chansons qu’il favorise — de celui qui, évoluant dans la vallée laurentienne, s’est répandu dans les régions du Québec, ainsi qu’en Nouvelle-Angleterre et dans le nord et l’est de l’Ontario. Cette communication examine les caractéristiques de ce répertoire et l’éclairage qu’il apporte à l’étude de la chanson traditionnelle française en Amérique française.
