Abstract
Avec ses 130 000 habitants, Toluca de Lerdo, capitale de l'Etat de Mexico, n'arrive qu'au 30 e rang des villes mexicaines. Cependant, elle a presque doublé sa population en moins de dix ans. Cette brutale augmentation est due en grande partie à l'exode rural, régional ou originaire des Etats voisins. La proximité de Mexico (67 km) bien reliée par rail et par route, le développement récent d'une importante zone industrielle et les activités traditionnelles de services et de commerce sont d'autres facteurs d'expansion démographique. Toluca, en fait, appartient à la couronne de ces villes satellites qui gravitent autour du District Fédéral (comme Pachuca ou Cuernavaca) et qui arrivent difficilement à conserver leur autonomie économique et culturelle. L'étude de son système commercial va révéler la coexistence d'un secteur traditionnel avec une activité mercantile moderne. A partir du « tianguis » ou marché rural précortésien, s'est développée une vie commerciale de gros bourg agricole. Plus récemment, l'apparition de supermarchés, liée à l'implantation d'un puissant réseau bancaire et à la mise en place d'agences fédérales spécialisées dans la commercialisation des denrées agricoles, a fait entrer Toluca dans la vie d'affaires du 20 e siècle. La municipalité, par une réglementation stricte de ses marchés, essaie d'en tirer un maximum de recettes en attendant de profiter à plein des rentrées de la zone industrielle.
