Abstract
Résumé L’artiste canadien Jeff Wall est considéré comme un maître de la mise en scène du réel. Ses photographies présentent des scènes banales, aux sujets très divers, mais liées par une même impression étrange : celle d’images du réel, familières, paraissant pourtant anormales – parfois même factices. Et pour cause, ses photographies sont le fruit d’une construction mûrement pensée. Jeff Wall élabore, depuis la fin des années 1970, une œuvre photographique pétrie de références à l’histoire de l’art, qui propose un regard de peintre sur la vie moderne. Ces dernières années, l’artiste a poussé plus loin sa réflexion, parvenant au principe de « presque documentaire », qui définit aujourd’hui son travail et qui témoigne à la fois de la distance prise avec le documentaire, et de son intégration dans l’idée que Wall a développé de la réalité : une reconstruction, à partir d’une observation stricte, telle une reconstitution documentaire.
