Le ciel de Québec de Jacques Ferron s’offre comme une oeuvre complexe et déroutante. Et ce, tant sur le plan de l’énonciation que sur celui du propos. Sur le plan formel, il relève du conte et de la fable, de l’épopée, du roman d’apprentissage, aussi bien que de la chronique et de l’historiette. Sur le plan thématique, il emprunte plusieurs directions, se présentant tour à tour et simultanément comme un récit de fondation, une fable nationaliste, un règlement de comptes avec La Relève, une saga de l’Amérique amérindienne, une chronique des moeurs politiques des années 1930, une réflexion sur l’art, la littérature et la peinture. Bref, il forme une véritable courtepointe faite de pièces rapportées qui lui donnent un caractère hétérogène et bigarré sous lequel on peut toutefois retrouver une certaine unité liée à l’optimisme qui anime alors l’écriture de Ferron et qui repose sur sa conviction de voir bientôt l’avènement du pays québécois comme autorité enfin souveraine. On peut donc le lire comme l’expression euphorique d’un nationalisme que la Crise d’octobre 1970 allait bientôt ébranler, imprimant une bifurcation décisive dans l’oeuvre de Ferron au cours de la décennie suivante et le conduisant à une prise de distance effective à l’endroit d’un projet historique de plus en plus incertain et problématique.
