The Psychiatric Status and Treatment Needs of a Random Sample of Juveniles Charged with Delinquency

Abstract
A random sample (50) of all juveniles (2,200) charged with delinquency in a large city was examined to obtain an unbiased and comprehensive estimate of the extent of psychiatric disability in these children and their treatment needs. The children were separated into three groups designated ‘normal’ (46°/o), ‘social delinquent’ (22%) and ‘emotionally disturbed’ (32%). This classification helped to clarify the type of intervention required. The high percentage of psychiatric disability found represents a major indication for probation officers to be alert to the need to refer cases for evaluation. The findings confirm the proposition that a multi-faceted team approach involving home, school, community agencies, probation officers, and psychiatrists when applicable, is vital to the treatment of juvenile delinquents.
