Abstract
Le folkloriste Marius Barbeau est un pionnier en son domaine au Canada. Son approche méthodologique a marqué quelques générations de chercheurs en ethnologie, mais elle n’a pas fait l’objet d’analyse approfondie depuis sa mise en oeuvre au début du xxe siècle. Au fait, un certain « folklore du folklore » a peut-être entouré l’approche de Marius Barbeau, la délestant de sa rigueur méthodologique pour n’en retenir parfois qu’un côté pittoresque très descriptif. Nous pensons plutôt que Marius Barbeau a notamment procédé à un quadrillage des régions françaises d’Amérique susceptibles d’être des lieux de cueillette valable à ses yeux pour obtenir un folklore français le plus authentique possible. Il avait, pour procéder à sa démarche, des définitions précises du terrain et aussi de l’informateur recherché pour assurer la rigueur scientifique de son travail. Le cas de la région de Charlevoix est très intéressant à ce sujet, car Barbeau s’y rend dès 1916 et il s’agit d’un de ses premiers terrains en milieu francophone. Notre analyse prouve donc que, au-delà du folklore recueilli et par la suite retranscrit, Marius Barbeau était un chercheur bien au fait des approches de son époque et dont la démarche sur le terrain ne possédait aucune naïveté pittoresque, mais résultait bien d’une réflexion qui n’est pas sans apporter une nouvelle compréhension du folklore oral qu’il a retenu lors de ses enquêtes.
