S'inspirant d'une typologie des courants de pensée féministes, les auteures situent au sein du mouvement des femmes la pluralité des points de vue exprimés sur la maternité et en explicitent les enjeux tant théoriques que pratiques. Elles identifient la trajectoire des transformations progressives mais profondes qui se sont opérées dans le discours des femmes, à l'égard d'une première théorisation de la maternité appréhendée comme lieu d'oppression .Ainsi sont mis en évidence, à la lumière des écrits les plus récents, les ambiguïtés et les présupposés qu'il reste à clarifier pour élaborer une problématique de la maternité capable de rendre compte de l'expérience quotidienne des mères dans sa double composante matérielle et affective.
