Cet article est consacré aux méthodes d’enregistrement et d’exploitation des données de référencement géographique des cartes et plans dans les catalogues des bibliothèques. Après un bilan des pratiques qui suivent la norme et l’exposé des difficultés relatives à leur mise en œuvre, Jean-Luc Arnaud présente les possibilités offertes par les nouveaux outils de l’information géographique et du géoréférencement à travers quelques exemples. Le constat est sans appel, ces outils ont des performances sans commune mesure avec ceux préconisés par la norme. Les pratiques évoluent assez rapidement et, de toute évidence, la cartothéconomie est à un tournant de son histoire. Cependant, plusieurs années sont encore nécessaires pour évaluer avec un recul suffisant les résultats proposés par des outils eux-mêmes en évolution rapide.
