Abstract
Au milieu du xixe siècle, la mutualité, en tant que forme moderne de protection sociale, représente pour un grand nombre de familles ouvrières un affranchissement à l’égard d’une assistance charitable humiliante. Mais la mutualité ouvrière n’est pas qu’une simple forme de la prévoyance libérale comme l’épargne ou l’assurance. En effet, les associations mutualistes se présentent plutôt comme de véritables « familles fictives » à l’intérieur desquelles doit s’imposer une culture solidaire au moment de la transition à l’économie de marché. La résistance des mutualistes à l’intrusion de l’Église ultramontaine, de même que la contribution de la mutualité à la formation de la classe ouvrière témoignent bien de cette volonté populaire de refonder, au milieu du xixe siècle, les liens sociaux à l’intérieur d’une communauté ouvrière démocratique et égalitaire. Cet espoir, toutefois, se butera aux transformations profondes engendrées par le capitalisme industriel dans le dernier tiers du xixe siècle.
