Abstract
La définition de l'histoire chez Dumont peut faire l'objet de trois interprétations : 1) l'histoire comme science de l'interprétation, 2) l'histoire comme téléologie communautariste et 3) l'histoire en tant qu'achèvement éthique du vécu collectif. Or ces trois lectures fondent un concept relativement ambigu. La définition de l'histoire en tant que téléologie de l'aventure canadienne-française semble en effet contredire celle qui fait d'elle le moyen d'une participation, dans l'égalité, de tous les citoyens réunis au sein d'une même communauté politique. En effet, c'est bien l'histoire canadienne-française qui intéresse Dumont même lorsqu'il prétend se pencher sur la société québécoise. Or, l'actualité des débats autour du nationalisme au Québec et ailleurs nous rappelle la difficulté de concilier les mémoires concurrentes de l'expérience. Cet article se penche sur l'ambiguïté de la définition dumontienne de l'histoire à la recherche de ses présupposés théoriques et politiques. Il s'attache à montrer les raisons pour lesquelles Dumont est contraint de couler une conception universaliste de l'histoire dans le moule de la singularité canadienne-française et conclut que l'ambiguïté de la définition de son concept d'histoire est le propre des «sciences de la société» en terre minoritaire. L'œuvre de Dumont doit donc être lue à la lumière du tragique gisant au cœur de l'histoire du Québec et de son interprétation historienne.
