Gedongsongo terletak di bagian lereng selatan Gunungapi Ungaran, yang termasuk kawasan Kompleks Gunungapi Depresi Ungaran Jawa Tengah. Indikasi kegiatan panasbumi Gedongsongo dicirikan oleh adanya fumarola yang didominasi oleh uap, mataair panas, serta batuan ubahan. Data yang diperoleh dari lapangan dan laboratorium terdiri dari : (i). Selang-seling breksi laharik berfragmen andesit basaltik dengan aliran lava, intrusi andesit piroksen, batuan ubahan, dan bom (berkomposisi andesit-basaltik). (ii). Sesar normal yang berarah baratdaya – timurlaut di sepanjang tebing gunung bagian utara yang diduga berkaitan erat dengan munculnya intrusi andesit piroksen sebagai sumber panas bawah permukaan. (iii). Sesar geser yang mempunyai arah utara – selatan melalui sungai Item ditandai dengan munculnya mataair panas, uap panas dan fumarola ke permukaan. (iv). Batuan ubahan yang terbentuk ditunjukkan oleh munculnya mineral – mineral haloisit, kaolinit, silika amorf, kristobalit, ilit, markasit, dan pirit. Batuan ubahan tersebut terjadi dekat dengan sumber fumarola dan mataair panas di sepanjang sungai Item. Asosiasi kelompok mineral ubahan yang terbentuk, dapat menyarankan suhu batuan reservoir bawah permukaan lapangan panasbumi Gedongsongo berkisar dari 70oC - 200oC dan bersifat asam. Gedongsongo is located at the south flank of the Ungaran Mountain within the Ungaran Depression Volcanic Complex, Central Java. Geothermal activities are characterized by vapour dominated fumaroles, hotsprings, and hydrothermally altered rocks. Geological data obtained from field and laboratory works, consist of : (i) interlayering laharic breccia with basaltic andesite fragments and lava flow, alteration rocks, and bombs (basaltic andesite in composition), (ii). The southwest-northeast normal fault along northern part of mountain which is triggered the pyroxene andesite intrussion, assumed as a heatsource and have been controlled to the altered rock formation at the area, (iii). The north-south strike slip fault through the Item River triggered hotspring and hot vapour dominated fumaroles to the surface, (iv). Altered rocks, which are characterized by halloysite, kaolinite, amorphous silica, crystobalite, illite, marcasite, and pyrite. Those alteration mineral assemblages located close to the fumarole and hotspring along the Item River. The alteration mineral assemblages suggest that the temperature of reservoir rock beneath the Gedongsongo geothermal field ranges from 70oC - 200oC and acidic environment.
