Abstract
Cette recherche s'inscrit dans un travail plus vaste qui tente de montrer que les professions libérales sont des pratiques idéologiques. Le recours à l'histoire constitue une voie privilégiée pour mettre en évidence les fonctions de sélection et de généralisation de l'idéologie. La période retenue ici, soit l'implantation d'une profession dans la société québécoise, de même que la profession choisie, le travail social, permettent d'analyser ces fonctions à travers trois phases caractéristiques, soit l'équilibre, la rupture et la convergence. D'abordassocié au discours religieux de la mission et de la vocation, le discours des travailleurs sociaux québécois doit prendre ses distances pour bien marquer sa spécificité. Un nouveau discours sur le développement social permettra à la profession d'accéder à l'autonomie et de s'imposer graduellement dans le champ du bien-être.
