Abstract
L’auteur considère les caractéristiques des dictionnaires géographiques, les travaux de ses collègues et sa propre démarche. À partir de la décennie 1950, les oeuvres terminologiques de géographie se sont surtout développées dans les départements de géographie (centre Gécet, Université Laval, 1966) et, indirectement, à la Commission de géographie du Québec, réactivée en 1977. Les publications sont limitées par le flottement de la conceptualisation de la discipline, le manque d’intérêt lexical (à l’exception du domaine de la géomorphologie), la quasi-inexistence d’une formation proprement linguistique, ainsi que par l’utilisation de mots de la langue commune dans une langue de spécialité. Néanmoins, des géographes produisent des dictionnaires, qu’ils soient généraux, thématiques ou régionaux. L’ensemble de ces travaux se rangent en sept catégories. La production québécoise a connu un net progrès, notamment entre 2000 et 2003 : 20 000 nymes différents ont été définis au cours de cette période.
