Abstract
As the science of neuropsychology advances, the treatment and understanding of mental illness is likely to change. This will have important implications for general practice. A quarter of GP appointments are for mental health problems and 90% of mental health care is provided in primary care (Department of Health, 1999). Trends in mental health morbidity and the growing remit of primary care might even have raised those figures in the last 5 years.
