Abstract
Au cours de la période 1870-1895, les associations littéraires évoluent en faveur d'une autonomie basée sur des déterminations proprement littéraires. En témoigne la fondation de la Société royale du Canada qui situe à un autre niveau la lutte pour l'occupation du champ littéraire. Plutôt que de mettre aux prises des libéraux et des ultramontains plus soucieux de faire avancer leur cause que de spécifier le littéraire, les oppositions et les antagonismes suscités par la Société concernent les structures internes du champ littéraire, c'est-à-dire les positions qu'y occupent des individus ou des groupes placés en situation de concurrence pour la légitimité littéraire. Ce mouvement d'autonomisation caractérise également de nombreux clubs, cercles et cénacles littéraires qui permettent la formation d'un public d'initiés et, partant, la reconnaissance entre pairs. Ces regroupements annoncent en quelque sorte la configuration moderne de l'institutionnalisation du champ littéraire qui se concrétisera à la fin du siècle avec la fondation de l'École littéraire de Montréal.
