Le présent article résume les conceptions de Piaget et de van Hiele relatives à la genèse et au développement d’idées spatiales. Il montre, par la suite, la complémentarité des deux approches et met en évidence l’importance et la prédominence de structures spatio-visuelles dans la conception initiale d’objets géométriques. Les observations faites lors de l’expérimentation de l’activité de compter les faces de polyèdres sont alors intégrées dans ce contexte théorique en interprétant les procédures de dénombrement en tant que phénomènes révélateurs d’absence ou d’existence, d’émergence ou de développement de structurations intérieures d’objets géométriques chez un individu.
