SMMP4 Haemodynamic Load during Stress in Women with Ischaemic Heart Disease

Abstract
Objective: The incidence of cardiovascular disease increases sharply following menopause. One potential mechanism is increased haemodynamic load during stress. Haemodynamic load is characterized by increases in blood pressure (BP) and systemic vascular resistance (SVR). This study tested the hypothesis that haemodynamic load during stress is higher in postmenopausal women with ischaemic heart disease (IHD) than in healthy age-matched controls. Methods: 100 postmenopausal women aged 50 to 80 years (49 with IHD and 51 healthy age-matched controls) were randomly assigned by order to two mental stress tasks (public speaking and mirror trace). Impedance cardiography and an oscilliometric BP monitor were used to record heart rate (HR), BP, cardiac output; and SVR non-invasively at rest and during two laboratory-based mental stress tasks (public speaking and mirror trace). Haemodynamic measurements were recorded during the last 3 minutes of the 20 minute resting baseline and for 3 minutes during both stressor tasks. Measures were averaged to yield baseline and task values and per cent changes from resting baseline were calculated and compared.
