Abstract
Résumé En 1980, dans Conversa acabada , son premier longmétrage, consacré à la correspondance entre Fernando Pessoa et Mário de Sá-Carneiro, João Botelho confie à Manoel de Oliveira le rôle, très singulier, du prêtre qui donne l’extrême-onction à Fernando Pessoa sur son lit d’hôpital. Dans ce plan emblématique, dans ce geste d’ambition pour le cinéma, un jeune cinéaste alors inconnu propose au seul des pionniers du cinéma portugais qui ait été capable de maintenir une éthique et une esthétique à distance du salazarisme, une place qui le met, au nom du cinéma, dans une sorte de position d’héritage d’une entreprise littéraire qui fut ambitieuse, par la pensée, pour le Portugal. Au-delà des documents d’enregistrement des événements de 1974 et 1975, ou des films d’intervention militante, donc au cœur même de la fiction, un ensemble d’œuvres cinématographiques majeures atteste combien l’art cinématographique au Portugal a alors trouvé, dans l’examen de la question du pays, une de ses préoccupations centrales, en même temps qu’une énergie créatrice vitale.
