Abstract
Dès le lendemain de la parution de sa Genèse de la société québécoise, en 1993, Fernand Dumont s'attaquait à l'ouvrage qui devait en être la suite sous le titre L'avènement du Québec contemporain. Il savait l'entreprise extrêmement exigeante et, comme le révèlent ses mémoires, il avait lucidement envisagé qu'il pourrait ne pas la mener à terme, qu'elle demeurerait un chantier ouvert comme plusieurs autres projets d'écriture. Tout en menant son combat contre le cancer qui l'a emporté le V mai 1997, et en plus de rédiger Raisons communes, Une foi partagée et des mémoires, Fernand Dumont a tout de même réussi à compléter la rédaction de ce qui devait être le premier chapitre de L'avènement du Québec contemporain. C'est ce texte sur l'essor et le déclin du Canada français qui constitue la matière de l'article inséré dans ce numéro conçu pour rendre hommage à Fernand Dumont et à son œuvre. L'exposé forme un tout en soi, mais on aura sans doute intérêt à le lire en ayant à l'esprit les principes de méthode exposés dans l'appendice à la Genèse intitulé « Présupposés et justifications ». L'introduction qu'il avait rédigée à L'avènement du Québec contemporain indiquait que les mêmes principes inspiraient la conception de l'ouvrage mis en chantier.
