Abstract
This article will examine the complex portrayal of the Faust and Mephisto figures in Else Lasker-Schuler’s long-suppressed play IchundIch, written in 1940/1941, but published only in 1970. It will show how her unusual work fits into the tradition of Faust portrayals in modern German literature, with reference to its place within the framework of the Faust myth in Holocaust literature. It will focus on how IchundIch varies and to a certain extent even deconstructs Goethe’s Faust figure, and thus examine the relationship of Faust and Mephisto with each other and with God. Lasker-Schuler was familiar with Goethe’s writings from an early age (Bauschinger 68). One of her first four poems (published in 1899), “Liebe,” contains a clear association to Goethe’s “Mignonlied”:
