L’usage du pseudonyme a longtemps été considéré comme une pratique marginale, et par conséquent a été peu étudié. Au Québec, on constate toutefois que, des débuts de l’imprimerie à l’aube des années quatre-vingt, 1 192 livres ou brochures ont été publiés sous un faux nom. Bien sûr, la plupart de ces signatures étaient transparentes et n’avaient pas pour but de mystifier le lecteur. Pourquoi donc ces auteurs ont-ils décidé d’user de faux noms ? En mettant en rapport l’évolution de l’usage du pseudonyme au Québec avec l’évolution du statut des auteurs, cet article propose des pistes de réponse.
