Abstract
The Victorian music hall was warmly Tory in its political sentiments. The former Tory prime minister John Major returns the favour in this affectionate history, beamed through the prism of his father's career in the halls in the early twentieth century – the time when this prototype modern entertainment industry reached its zenith. Described as ‘a personal pilgrimage’, the book aspires to be a serious study; it is the result of ‘long and arduous’ research and claims to offer ‘an informative, but most of all entertaining read’ (pp. xvi–xvii). This is the secret dream of many a beleaguered modern academic: prospecting a work of scholarly respectability that can double as a lucrative trade publication.
