Abstract
La cohabitation au sein d'ensembles HLM de populations différenciées au plan de l'origine ethnique ou raciale soulève la question de la compatibilité des modes d'habiter des groupes en présence. Si ces modes d'habiter sont trop différenciés, la cohabitation est susceptible de créer des tensions, voire des conflits et d'induire dans certains cas des tentatives d'appropriation exclusive d'un ensemble par un groupe. Nous nous attacherons ici à analyser ces situations. Après un bref rappel des objets de conflit, nous montrerons comment se construit une représentation de l'Autre à travers un processus d'ethnicisation des différences. Par ailleurs, la remise en question du caractère universel du mode d'habiter du groupe majoritaire induit un sentiment de désappropriation face à leur milieu de vie qui est ressenti vivement par les habitants de ce groupe. Cette situation conduit à l'émergence de conflits territoriaux qui nécessitent la mise au point d'un mode de gestion des relations entre les habitants. Ce mode de gestion devrait permettre la mise en place d'une nouvelle territorialité construite sur d'autres bases que l'homogénéité ethnique et capable d'intégrer la diversité.
