Gazete ve dergiler günlük sosyal, kültürel, bilimsel ve edebi gelişmeleri okuyucularına duyuran en yaygın bilgi kaynaklarıdır. Kitaplar kadar uzun bir geçmişe sahip olmasa da matbaa ve ulaşım olanaklarının gelişmesiyle özellikle gündelik gelişmeler ve bilim alanında yoğun bir etkiye sahip olmuşlardır. XVIII. yüzyılın son çeyreğinden itibaren geniş kitlelere yayılan gazete ve dergiler, tarihleri itibarıyla birer efemera (geçici süreli belge) niteliği taşısalar da, meraklılar ve araştırmacılar için birer koleksiyon/özel arşiv malzemesi niteliği de taşıyabilirler. Ancak birçok araştırmacı, meraklı veya koleksiyoncu, gazetenin tamamı yerine ilgilendikleri bölümü toplamayı tercih ederler. Genellikle ilgilenilen bölümün kesilmesi ile biriktirilmeye/saklanmaya başlayan bu parçalara kesik veya kupür denilmektedir. Kesik/kupürlerin arşivlenmesi, diğer bazı arşiv malzemesi ile karşılaştırıldığında daha özen gösterilmesi ve dikkat edilmesi gereken bir süreçtir. Çalışmada, söz konusu malzemenin hangi niteleme alanlarıyla ve nasıl arşivlenmesi ve nasıl korunması gerektiği örnekler verilerek değerlendirilecektir.
