Dans la perspective de l’étude et du traitement des dysfonctionnements de la cognition, chercheurs et thérapeutes se sont saisis, dès le début des années 1990, des possibilités offertes par les concepts et les technologies de la réalité virtuelle. Ces technologies offrent en effet à l’être humain de nouveaux espaces d’interaction et d’expression dans lesquels il peut être immergé, dans des conditions de plus en plus diversifiées allant de systèmes lourds permettant une immersion multi-sensorielle (tel que CAVE®) à des supports utilisés dans la vie quotidienne accessibles à des coûts de plus en plus bas (console Wii). Elles permettent une exploration multiparamétrique de l’activité de l’utilisateur, et ainsi la compréhension de sa performance dans des tâches simulées ayant du sens. Le champ de la santé et du handicap est un domaine d’application prometteur dans lequel l’intégration de ces technologies soulève de nombreuses questions tant au niveau de la compréhension du fonctionnement humain, de la simulation des tâches et des univers virtuels qu’au niveau de l’interfaçage du participant avec le monde virtuel. Les travaux menés dans ce domaine sont donc marqués par une forte interdisciplinarité, avec des compétences tant humaines et sociales que cliniques et technologiques.
