Abstract
Parmi les milliers de musiciens employés par l’Église en 1790, Mathurin Leprêtre (1745-1808) représente le type du chantre de base, tel qu’il en existait dans d’innombrables églises de paroisse et dans les collégiales modestes. Issu d’un milieu rural, où l’on pratique une double activité agricole et textile, il ne semble pas avoir été éduqué dans une psallette. Pourtant, de l’âge de 22 ans jusqu’à la Révolution, et sans doute à nouveau après celle-ci, il chante au chœur des églises de Laval, tout en continuant à tisser. Sa voix forte est appréciée au point de susciter intrigues et convoitises entre les chapitres de la ville. La requête autobiographique qu’il rédige en 1794 est un texte précieux qui permet de connaître les étapes de sa carrière, mais aussi certains traits de sa mentalité ainsi qu’une aventure dramatique survenue un soir de janvier 1779.
