Abstract
Abstract Existential philosophy is explored as a basis for counseling and psychotherapy. It is seen as focussing on the inescapable givens of existence: freedom, isolation, meaninglessness, and death. It is argued that the experience of meaning and purpose as overriding values of existence is the basis of both the egalitarian therapeutic relationship in person-centered counseling, and the postmodern effort to reconstruct one's reality in rational-emotive therapy. Existential counseling, because it is informed by philosophy, is seen as providing the why rather than the how of the psychotherapeutic process. Existential therapy for anxiety is offered as an example of the way this view of human nature differs from commonly accepted counseling paradigms.
