Abstract
Perceforest , vaste roman vraisemblablement écrit au xv e siècle, se revendique comme « chronique ». Pourtant, on peut supposer que le lecteur médiéval l’a reçu comme roman dans la mesure où il répond à un horizon d’attente stratifié, dont certains éléments se sont mis en place dès le xii e siècle (la traduction), qui s’est étoffé au xiii e siècle (avec entre autres la mise en cycle), pour se compléter au xiv e et se renouveler en s’éloignant du Graal. Perceforest présente des caractéristiques romanesques certaines, hétérogènes et parfois contradictoires, du fait de l’histoire déjà longue du roman et de la persistance des modèles anciens. Certains traits semblent menacer l’identification de ce texte comme roman. Pourtant la diversité de ce texte, qui propose des identifications génériques très variées, qui emprunte à des sources multiples, hors même du champ romanesque, la mise en cause héroïque, dans des développements burlesques et héroï-comiques, ainsi que la dénonciation de l’illusion (et par là même de la fiction), loin de fragiliser l’identification générique, la renforcent, tant il est vrai que le roman est un genre dynamique et pluriel, dès ses origines.
