Des travaux récents révèlent la progression et la diversification croissante des familles recomposées au Canada et leur instabilité de plus en plus marquée. Grâce à l'analyse des transitions, on peut estimer les effets de diverses caractéristiques sur la durée de vie conjugale dans ce type de famille, et mettre ainsi en évidence la fragilité accrue des recompositions familiales survenues depuis les années soixante-dix et l'instabilité plus grande des couples unis par union libre plutôt que par mariage. On découvre à l'inverse que la présence d'enfants d'âge préscolaire au moment de la formation de l'unité familiale et l'arrivée d'un enfant issu du couple réduiraient les risques d'éclatement des familles; le type de recomposition familiale exercerait également un effet sur la durée des unions, celles qui comprennent un père gardien et sa nouvelle conjointe étant nettement plus stables.
